Msgr. Oscar A. Cadayona appointed 5th\u00a0 School President<\/strong><\/h6>\n

The Rev. Msgr. Oscar A. Cadayona<\/strong> became the Saint Joseph College\u2019s fifth president on August 1, 2024. A philosopher-theologian-priest by training, an educator at heart, and a passionate advocate for holistic formation of the young, he has served at the Saint Joseph College since year 1999 in various capacities as a faculty member and as a head of different administrative offices. In that role and others, he has helped the administration to strengthen the school\u2019s capacities in holistic education, research, and creative practice integrating values, policy, and collaborative approaches to advancing social, ecological, intellectual and spiritual resilience.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The then Fr. Cadayona joined Saint Joseph College as a member of the faculty right after his ordination to the priesthood in 1998.\u00a0 The then School President and at the same time the Bishop of Maasin, H.E. Most Rev. Precioso D. Cantillas, SDB, DD, appointed him as the first Campus Ministry Director in addition to his Chancery works as Bishop\u2019s Private Secretary, Diocesan Chancellor and Minor Seminary Rector .\u00a0 He later became the second Dean of the newly established Theology Department in 2002.\u00a0 In 2012, he was appointed as Vice President for Academic Affairs after his return from studies abroad. He immediately revived the initiative to have certain college courses and the Junior High and Senior High Departments accredited by PAASCU to set and maintain the quality standards of education in SJC.\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Having strengthened the Office of Research and Development, he led the creation of the following offices to establish and strengthen community engagement and linkages here and abroad:\u00a0 Public Affairs and Publication Office, Community Extension Service Office, and Office of Alumni Relations, and Human Resource Management and Development Office.\u00a0 In 2021, Msgr. Cadayona became the Executive Vice President.\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Also actively engaged in the administration of the Diocese of Maasin, Msgr. Cadayona serves until today as the Vicar General and Moderator Curiae, member of the College of Consultors, and Diocesan Coordinator of the Synodal Consultation.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Msgr. Cadayona received a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy and English Literature from the San Carlos Seminary College, Mabolo, Cebu City (Valedictorian<\/em>\/Summa<\/em> Cum<\/em> Laude<\/em>), a Bachelor in Sacred Theology from the University of Santo Tomas, Manila (Magna<\/em> Cum<\/em> Laude<\/em>), a Licentiate in Sacred Theology and Master of Arts in Higher Religious Studies from the University of Santo Tomas, Manila (Magna<\/em> Cum<\/em> Laude<\/em>), and a Licentiate in Philosophy in Science and Metaphysics from the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross, Rome, Italy (Magna<\/em> Cum<\/em> Laude<\/em>).\u00a0 He earned doctoral units from the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas in Rome, Italy and got his Doctorate in Philosophy in Philosophical Anthropology (Excellent<\/em>) via distance learning from the Selinus University of Sciences and Literature, Ragusa\/Bologna, Italy.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 As a seminarian, he served as a student leader, Seminary Chancellor, Class Moderator, and Editor-in-Chief of the Students\u2019 Publication of the Faculty of Sacred Theology of the University of Santo Tomas, Manila.\u00a0 As a priest, he served in different capacities as a parochial vicar, a Chaplain of a Filipino Chaplaincy of Migrants,\u00a0\u00a0 an Episcopal Vicar for Administration and Pastoral Planning, an Executive Pastor, and a Pastor.\u00a0 His favorite pastimes are writing poetry, essay and one-act play, aside from visiting the sick, friends and parishioners.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 When the government announced on July 13, 2022 that its moratorium on new nursing programs in higher education institutions (HEIs) was lifted,\u00a0 the School administration began keeping in touch with the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) Regional Office in Tacloban City how to proceed its plan to take advantage of the opening of the possibility to offer the course in almost a century old Saint Joseph College.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Bishop Precioso D. Cantillas, SD, DD, School President at that time, together with the\u00a0 Executive Vice President, Msgr. Oscar A. Cadayona, received encouragement from Bishop\u2019s long time friend during TESDA days, the Regional Director, Dr. Maximo Aljibe, to start the application process.\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The CHED Central Office came to Maasin City to visit Saint Joseph College during the first week of June, 2024.\u00a0 The technical panel of five checked the important documents and personally inspect the facilities which impressed the visitors.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 So, Saint Joseph College (SJC) is now proud to announce that its Bachelor of Science in Nursing program has been officially approved by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED).<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 This approval comes alongside the unveiling of the college’s state-of-the-art facilities, designed to provide an exceptional learning environment for aspiring nurses. The CHED approval signifies that SJC\u2019s Nursing program meets rigorous academic standards and is equipped to deliver high-quality education.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The program features advanced simulation labs, modern classrooms, and comprehensive clinical training areas, ensuring that students receive hands-on experience in a realistic healthcare setting.<\/p>\n

Bagares, RN, MAN, Dean of the new program, expressed his excitement about the approval and the new facilities, stating, \u201cWe are thrilled to receive CHED\u2019s endorsement for our Nursing program. Our state-of-the-art facilities will enhance the learning experience, allowing students to develop their skills in an environment that mirrors real-world healthcare scenarios.\u201d<\/p>\n

The newly designed nursing facilities include simulation labs equipped with the latest technology, allowing students to practice clinical skills using high-fidelity mannequins and interactive simulations. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The approval of the Nursing program and the introduction of cutting-edge facilities have generated enthusiasm among students and faculty. \u201cHaving access to such modern resources is a game changer for us. In a significant step towards enhancing academic collaboration, the College of Liberal Arts of Saint Joseph College (SJC) and the Department of Philosophy and Social Sciences of Visayas State University (VSU) officially forged a partnership through the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) on Novemebr 11, 2024.<\/p>\n

The MOA signing ceremony, held at SJC’s Academic Council Conference Room, was attended by key officials from both institutions, including Msgr. Oscar Cadayona, President of SJC, and Dr. Glenn Pajares, Dean of the VSU Department of Philosophy and Social Sciences.<\/p>\n

The Director of the Community Extension Service Office, Ms. Ruby T. de la Torre, together with the Director of the Office of Arts and Culture, Mr. Ferdinand V. Garvez,\u00a0 led a group of Josephinians\u00a0 to two Southern Leyte towns\u00a0 where \u201cMamanwa\u201d, one of the oldest nomadic tribes in the Philippines, live.\u00a0 The purpose of the visit, which happened on September 19-21, 2024, was twofold:\u00a0 to\u00a0 have a need assessment survey and to get to know more about their culture which until now not many people are familiar with.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 They went first to San Fransisco, Southern Leyte\u00a0 where they met first with the Municipal Mayor and afterwards they walked up hill for four kilometers to reach the community.\u00a0 The nomadic people welcomed the visitors and entertained their questions.<\/p>\n
