We are also asking what it means to begin.

The First Mass in the Philippines, celebrated in 1521, often appears as a simple moment in history. A group of people gathered. A prayer was said. A ritual was done. But when we think about it more deeply, it becomes something else. It becomes a question about faith, culture, and change.

What does it mean for something new to enter a place that already has its own life?

Before that Mass, the people of Limasawa already had beliefs, stories, and ways of living. They already knew how to see the world. The Mass did not happen in an empty space. It happened in a place full of meaning. This reminds us that history is not just about firsts. It is also about encounters.

The First Mass can be seen as a meeting of worlds. On one side, there were the explorers, carrying their faith and their mission. On the other side, there were the natives, standing on their own land, with their own understanding of life. The Mass, then, is not only a religious act. It is also a moment of dialogue.

This brings us to a deeper thought. When we commemorate this event, are we celebrating the gift of faith, or are we also facing the truth about colonization?

Faith can inspire hope, unity, and meaning. But history shows that it can also be tied to power. The cross that was planted can be seen as a sign of belief but also as a sign of arrival and control. These two meanings coexist, and we cannot ignore either of them.

So, what should we do with this memory?

Maybe the answer is not to simply praise or reject it. Maybe the better path is to understand it. To see both the beauty of faith and the pain of history. To accept that our identity today is shaped by moments like these, even if they are complex.

The 505th anniversary of the First Mass in Limasawa is not just about looking back. It is about asking who we are now. It is about asking what kind of people we want to be.

Do we accept history without question, or do we learn from it?

In the end, the First Easter Mass is a beginning. But every beginning asks for a response. And that response is now in our hands.

______

#TheJosephinian

#TheJMAG

#505thFirstEasterSundayMass

Words: Neil Jayson Maligat | The Josephinian

Layout: Nykisha Tadena | The Josephinian

On the 505th anniversary of the First Easter Mass in Limasawa, we are not only remembering a past event.
