Every 21st of September, the global community celebrates the International Day of Peace – an annual event established by the United Nations to promote peace and unity across nations and people. Declared 44 years ago, the date was marked to build not only a culture of peace but also to promote non-violence.
Marking its 80th anniversary since its first celebration just after World War II, this yearsโ theme โAct Now for a Peaceful Worldโ emphasizes the collective efforts of everyone in fostering peace and unity across the globe. Through shared efforts, the proper addressing of conflicts, and the breaking down of barriers, unity can be achieved.
With various issues and arising problems that the world is facing today, the celebration calls everyone, especially those who are in the position, to reaffirm their commitment in promoting harmony and solidarity.
As Antรณnio Guterres, the current Secretary General of the UN, says, “Peace is the most powerful force for a better future โ and it is within our grasp if we choose it.โ Let this occasion remind everyone that peace begins with us and our choices; thus, we must always choose it in order to live a more understanding and united world.
