In a joint effort to promote a healthier and more informed youth, junior high school students gathered at the Mandia Gym on Friday morning for a Drug Awareness and Health & Wellness Seminar, held from 7:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon. The event was organized in partnership with the Department of Health (DOH), City Health Unit, City Youth Development Office, and Saint Joseph College.
The program opened with an invocation led by Mr. Denver Cinco, followed by the singing of the national anthem. Dr. Melodina L. De La Cruz, Junior High School Principal, delivered the opening remarks, highlighting the importance of educating young minds on health-related issues and the dangers of substance abuse.
To set the tone and energize the crowd, an intermission number was performed by talented student performers, capturing the spirit of youth engagement and enthusiasm.
The seminar featured a line-up of insightful speakers who addressed critical issues affecting todayโs youth:
Ray John Hatayna discussed the rising concern of teenage pregnancy, offering guidance on making responsible choices.
Dr. April Gervie Macabuhay, a health and wellness expert, emphasized the importance of maintaining a balanced lifestyle for both physical and mental well-being.
Ms. Lourdes Aguilar gave a compelling talk on HIV/AIDS awareness, stressing the value of education and prevention.
Ms. Almira Leonor-Miras provided an informative session on drug identification and the ill effects of drug use, highlighting real-life consequences and signs of substance abuse.
Ms. Julie Mae P. Balbarona explained the Republic Act 9165 (Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002), outlining legal implications and the government’s role in drug prevention.
Throughout the seminar, students remained highly attentive and engaged, showing genuine interest in the topics presented. Their active participation reflected the success of the event in raising awareness and fostering a proactive attitude toward health and safety.
The seminar concluded with a call to action for students to become advocates for a drug-free and healthy lifestyleโan essential step toward building a stronger, more resilient community.
