The thing that makes us human is our ability to think. People from places have different ideas about what it means to be human. For a lot of people being human is about being aware of things, having knowledge, and being able to reason. Humanity is really about things, like consciousness, knowledge, and reason.

According to the classic Western tradition, human beings are defined as “rational” or “logical animals.” Logic, as the investigation of the principles of reasoning, has been studied by many civilizations throughout history, and since its earliest formulations, logic has played an important role in the development of philosophy and the sciences. Today, January 14, 2026, we celebrate the study of correct reasoningโ€”more commonly known as World Logic Day.

The importance of logic is often overlooked even though it is crucial to the development of knowledge, sciences, and technologies. UNESCO, together with the International Council for Philosophy and Human Sciences (CIPSH), declared the 14th of January as World Logic Day in order to promote the intellectual heritage, conceptual role, and practical value of logic to the interdisciplinary science communities and the general public.

The annual World Logic Day is an example of an international cooperative initiative designed to advance international collaboration and the development of logic in research and teaching, supporting the activities of international logic associations, the university logic community, and other institutions, and improving the general public’s understanding of logic and its relevance to science, technology, and innovation. Additionally, World Logic Day may help to foster a culture of peace, constructive dialogue, and understanding through the advancement of education and science.
