Today, the World Day for African and Afrodescendant Culture, we recall that culture is more than traditionsโit is history, identity, and voice. Often unconsciously, the African and Afrodescendant cultures have influenced the world in impactful ways: from the music we listen to, to the food we eat, and even the words we use, their culture has contributed to our lives in ways we may not always realize. Today we are reminded that these cultures are not just part of our history books but rather alive, moving, and continuously shaping our everyday lives.
Today is also an opportunity to pause and reflect on the struggles of the African and Afrodescendant community. For a long time these communities have faced discrimination and silence despite their significant contributions to society. Celebrating this day means choosing to listen, to learn, and to stand for equality. It pushes us to embrace diversity and honor identities with pride.
When we celebrate African and Afrodescendant culture, we celebrate humanity itselfโstronger, richer, and more united because of our differences.
