The College of Liberal Arts’ Theatre Troupe has organized its 3rd Theatre Production which is an adaption of the story titled “The World is An Apple” by Alberto S. Florentino held at the SJC Audio-Visual Room on April 22, 2025. The adaptation was directed by Ms. Aloha Liwanan.

“The World is An Apple” follows the story of a poor family trapped in the state of poverty. Mario, the father of the household; portrayed by Virgelio Caballero, faces a moral conflict when his family’s survival is at stake. Tempted by an old friend, he is forced to choose between dignity and money. The play emphasizes the wrestle for moral integrity in the rage of economic poverty.

Gloria, Mario’s wife; portrayed by Aloha Liwanan, stays true to what is right despite what is happening around her and this virtue clashes with Mario’s struggles and temptations, showing the internal conflict within the household. Pablo, an old friend of Mario; portrayed by Andie Maturan, entices Mario to go back into his old habits. Tita, Mario and Gloria’s daughter; portrayed by Ashley Conato, breaks down as her Father gave in to the temptations.

The play reflects the struggles and challenges poor families in the Philippines faced in the 1950’s as the country had just recovered from the war and the economy had crashed and plundered. People at that time resorted to illegal acts in order to survive and provide for their families. Life’s temptations and hardships can lead one astray – it shows how easily one can lose their way when times are desperate.

“Our truest wealth lies not in what we grasp with our hands, but in what we hold firm within our hearts. The World is an Apple reminds us that though we may stumble and fall, it is the strength to rise again, to choose what is right over what is easy, that defines our true worth. Yet even as the world strips away comfort and pride, the story whispers a deeper truth: that there is still honor in struggling to do what is right, and beauty in the broken heart that still dares to hope”, a message from the CLA Governor, Keirsten Ulbora on her remarks about the play.
