UNESCO declared in 2021 that October 6th shall be marked as “International Geodiversity Day.” The day was first celebrated in 2022 as the official global event to mark the pivotal role geodiversity plays in sustaining life on Earth. It serves as an opportunity to recognize geodiversity’s value in nature conservation and its interconnectedness with biodiversity and climate resilience.
It recognizes the importance of the Earth’s geological features like rocks, minerals, and landscapes. Everything that is not alive, both on the surface and within the interior of the planet. These natural resources did a big part in our lives, often without us even realizing it. They have sustained us for as long as we can remember, and therefore, they deserve to be acknowledged and appreciated for the vital part they play in keeping us alive.
โThis is a reminder that natureโs gifts are meant for everyoneโs enjoyment. Each individual has the right to benefit from natureโs endowments and the opportunity to contribute to the promotion and the sustainable management of geoparks, such as our beloved island,โ said Vice Gov. Dionisio Balite during his welcome message at the event, representing Gov. Aris Aumentado as Bohol took part in the celebration.
This day unites the people in the goal of improving our environment and preserving our geodiversity. Humans must understand that our natural minerals deserve to be cared for and properly maintained, rather than being used up out of greed. We live on this planet, the place that we call home, and the right thing to do is to conserve it, not to destroy it.
