Every 17th of October, the world celebrates the International Day of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, which honors living traditions, skills, and cultural expressions that shape the identity of countries and communities. Proclaimed by the 42nd session of the General Conference in November 2023, the celebration highlights the vital importance of these intangible cultural heritages for future generations.
Also called living heritage, it not only reflects the living traditions we have today but also mirrors the rich, diverse culture of Filipinos that passes down through generations, showing the essence of who we are now.
But as the world continues to globalize, these cultures and traditions are now at risk of being forgotten. This celebration reminds us of our shared responsibility to safeguard our living heritage through continuous education and awareness, helping to preserve it for years to come.
May we continue to preserve these intangible cultures, which not only showcase the diverse beauty of our country, but also serve as our living expression of identity.
